Alpha & Beta Hydroxy Acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (or AHA) which is
naturally derived from sugar cane. Because of its small size,
Alpha & Beta Hydroxy acid is easily absorbed into the skin. It acts by
exfoliating (or peeling) the outer, dead layer of skin cells and
“rejuvenating” the skin. With regular use of Alpha & Beta Hydroxy acid
products in a skin maintenance program, skin texture and tone can be
significantly improved, thereby diminishing fine lines and uneven
pigmentation (blotchiness).
Because we recognize that you may be wary of claims made by
manufacturers of commercially-available skin care products, we have
fully researched and identified the best products in order to
provide you with a total skin care system which can be personalized
with products that will work together effectively for your
particular skin type.
What products will be prescribed?
The regimen includes
the following products, which we will select for you on an
individual basis according to your particular skin type and
needs:
- A mildly acidic facial cleanser that matches the natural pH of
normal, healthy skin.
- A lotion, gel, or cream containing the correct concentration
of Alpha & Beta Hydroxy acid for your skin type.
- A moisturizer for the face and/or eye areas.
- A bleaching (or lightening) cream to treat uneven pigmented
skin areas.
- A hypoallergenic (non-PABA-containing, fragrance-free)
sunscreen with added moisturizers.
- A hydrating spray that contains moisturizing and protective
ingredients.
Are there any risks to this program?
As with many
products absorbed through the skin, use of Alpha & Beta Hydroxy acid is not
recommended on skin which has recently been peeled or
dermabraded. In addition, you should not have this treatment
if you are currently using Accutane or have active eczema.
Patients with occasional acne breakouts may experience an initial
worsening of their acne during the first several weeks of
therapy. As treatment continues, however, the acne problem is
usually greatly improved. It is normal to have some skin
flaking or dryness in the first few weeks of Alpha & Beta Hydroxy acid use. This
flaking eventually subsides with the continued use of the
products.
Can you go out in the sun when you are using Alpha & Beta Hydroxy Acid
products?
Yes, however, you should try to avoid excessive sun
exposure at all times, since permanent damage to your skin can
occur, increasing the risk of skin cancer. We recommend the
use of an effective sunscreen with an APF of at least 15 whenever
sun exposure cannot be avoided. A tan can still be achieved
provided that a sunscreen is used to block the most damaging
(burning) ultraviolet rays.
**The Alpha & Beta Hydroxy acid products are non-neutralized in order to
maximize their effectiveness and give you the results available only
through a physician’s office. Other face and body skin
products not listed above are available for those patients
necessitating additional treatment. Please let us know if you
have additional questions after reading through this
material.
